The action opens in Mushnik’s struggling flower shop on Skid Row, where we meet the timid Seymour, the sweet but troubled Audrey, and their irritable boss, Mr. Mushnik. Business is bleak—until Seymour unveils a mysterious, exotic plant he’s been cultivating. Dubbed Audrey II, the strange plant begins to attract attention, fame, and fortune.
But as Audrey II grows, so does its appetite... and its influence. With a lively Greek chorus of streetwise singers guiding us through the action, Little Shop of Horrors spirals from quirky charm into something far darker—and far funnier—than anyone could expect.

Character Breakdown

The musical is set in 1950s America – Accents must reflect this

  • SEYMOUR (Tenor) - Gender: Male. Playing Age: Mid 20s–30s (to match Audrey). A shy, sweet, and well-meaning florist’s assistant. He’s not just a nerd—he has heart and depth. Requires strong acting and singing.
  • AUDREY (Mezzo-Soprano) - Gender: Female. Playing Age: Similar to Seymour.  Seymour’s secret crush—kind, vulnerable, and a bit rough around the edges. Needs strong comedy, acting, and singing skills.
  • MR. MUSHNIK (Baritone) -  Gender: Male. Playing Age: Older—believably old enough to adopt Seymour.  Grumpy, nervous owner of the flower shop. Think New York working-class, not Eastern European. Needs strong character acting and some singing.
  • ORIN (Baritone) - Gender: Male. Playing Age: 30s–early 40s.  Audrey’s sadistic, leather-clad dentist boyfriend. Tall, cocky, and cruel - but not a parody. Brief but impactful appearances. Actor also plays multiple cameo roles (Mr. Bernstein, Mrs. Luce, Skip Snip, and Patrick Martin). Strong character acting and singing.
  • THE PLANT (AUDREY II – Puppeteer) - Gender: Any.  Non-speaking role. Puppeteer for four versions of the growing plant, requiring strong physical acting, stamina, and expressive movement. Operates large, heavy puppets from within.
  • VOICE OF THE PLANT (Offstage Singer/Actor) - Gender: Any.  Seductive, bluesy voice with strong personality. Sarcastic, demanding, and funny. Needs excellent character singing and comic timing.
  • CRYSTAL, RONNETTE & CHIFFON (Mezzo-Sopranos). Gender: Female. Playing Age: 20s–mid 30s.  Streetwise, stylish, and sharp. These three form a close-harmony Greek chorus throughout the show. Strong singers and movers with great stage presence.
  •
  • ENSEMBLE (All vocal ranges) - Gender: All genders.  Play a variety of roles (Winos, Bag Lady, etc.) and support group numbers. Must be strong singers and movers. Ensemble also helps backstage with scene changes, props, and costumes throughout the show.
